My family invites you to join us to knit* for the families of the victims in Blacksburg. We would like to knit a comfort item for each family over the next few weeks. This is going to be a challenging project given the horrific number of victims, but we unfortunately know from personal experience that timeliness is important. We are thinking smaller items like little blankets or scarves that can be cuddled would be ideal.
[*sewing and crochet are also obviously welcome.]
What we would like to do is try and customize the item to each victim by using information provided here as it becomes available. If you can help, please post your adopted family in the comments so that we can make sure each family is included.

This is a lovely idea and I'm eager to start knitting something for the family of Emily Hilscher.
Two years ago, I had a terrible accident and needed a number of surgeries. A dear student gave ME a little warm, cuddly blanket to cuddle with - perfect for keeping my shaved head warm.
My blanket still gives me comfort and joy. Let's extend some love and comfort to others who suffer and mourn.

I have started work on a small afghan for the family of Julia Pryde.
Like me, she was a graduate student, had strong interests in environmental conservation, and had crafty tendencies.
I will sew something for the family of the teacher who barred the door to protect his students. Being a teacher myself I hope I would have the courage to do something like that if called upon.

so, it turns out that a yarn shop in Blacksburg got a similar idea after we did! they are happy to take the afghans and route them appropriately for us!
